Propose marriage - Propor a namorada em casamento? Not pedir?

Ele decidiu propor a namorada em casamento

He decided to propose to his girlfriend”

So, I found this sentence in smart review, but I’m not sure how it got there, and it seems wrong after some digging. Shouldn’t it be “pedir a namorada em casamento”? All other exampmles in practiceportuguese use pedir em casamento.

Thanks.

@jonatas, I agree, propor might sound awkward, although I have seen it used occasionally. The typical verb of choice is pedir - the exercise has already been updated, thanks
