When does procurar need preposition por?

I have two flash cards:

  • ela procura pela beleza em tudo (she looks for beauty in everything, with preposition)
  • tu procuras o cão (you look for the dog, without preposition)

Is the use of por optional? Is it required in some situations but not in others? Does its presence alter the meaning in a subtle way?

@Tomas, the preposition por is always optional. There’s no difference in meaning; if anything, there’s maybe a difference in tone or emphasis (can be perceived as higher in “procurar por”).
