Valid alternatives

Many of the exercises in the Units have more than one correct answer, particularly with regard to the inclusion/exclusion of articles. It would greatly enhance their usefulness if many, preferably all, the alternatives were recognized as valid answers. It is confusing and demotivating when correct answers are indicated to be wrong, especially without explanation.

I haven’t seen this yet, but I only just finished the A1 course.

You can click the three dits to the right of the problem and ask for help there.

The question will be included automatically in your request.

The people reviewing these comments are excellent.

At the risk of stating the obvious, asking for help on every exercise, in order to discover alternative valid answers to the exercise, is not a practical approach. That is what would be required, since the learner cannot necessarily tell when a valid alternative may exist and when not.

Sorry about your frustration. I’m just a student trying to help out. So far through all of the A1 level, I haven’t noticed this problem.

I am sure that in order for them to help you, they will need more details.

Oh. I think I understand what you are complaining about. I haven’t noticed because I just use the same answers from earlier in the lesson.

I have tried several programs and so far only duolingo allows multiple answers. But that is brazilian.

I can only recommend tapping the ‘fix typo’ button.

@sheepdog, thanks for your feedback. In general, we try to design our exercises so as to only offer one correct response. This doesn’t mean that that is the only way of expressing that particular idea in Portuguese because there are often many ways of wording things, but it’s the chosen one for that exercise (maybe to highlight a certain concept that the unit covers).

Ideally, there’s no chance of formulating or selecting another grammatically correct alternative with the available options unless we’ve configured such alternatives to be accepted as well. Sometimes we do miss some exercises where an alternative answer can be given and wasn’t considered, but we’re very responsive to user feedback and promptly correct any such cases when spotted/reported.

I must note that in several reports that we receive, the submitted alternatives actually have mistakes that the users don’t notice. It also happens sometimes that the question’s instructions aren’t followed, e.g. translating freely instead of writing exactly what you heard in a “listen and type” kind of exercise, or filling in repeated words in “fill in the blanks” question types. Otherwise, if there’s a valid issue, we’ll fix it  So please share with us any exercises/units where you’re having problems so we can check.
