Usar vs. calçar

There was a note that mentioned that you use the verb calçar to describe putting on things on your hands and feet (socks, gloves…) so this sentence I understand - “ela calça a luva”, but I didn’t understand the sentence “eu uso luvas no outono”. Myabe the verb usar is a more general verb to putting on all kinds of clothes?

Right, good question, @bldotan!

Like you said, the verb usar is very general and can be applied to all kinds of clothes/accessories. But more than that, the verb usar fits quite well when we’re simply describing the things we wear, rather than focusing on the specific action of putting something on. The verbs calçar (for what we wear on our hands and feet) and pôr (for what we wear anywhere in the body) usually refer specifically to this action, so they have a somewhat different scope.

We just added a relevant learning note recently, as part of one of our clothing units, so I’m just dropping this here: Portuguese Clothing Vocabulary :slightly_smiling_face:
