The use of "Ficar"

When asking “Onde fica o metro”, would you/could you use “Ficar” for most or all enquiries on direction/location IE “Onde fica o banco” etc etc

You could! That is a perfectly fine way to ask about the location of something. It is equivalent to using ser in this context. So, either of the following is correct, acceptable, and in common use:

 *"Onde fica o banco?"*
 *"Onde é o banco?"*

My sense is that the first way is more common in spoken Portuguese, but I’m not a native speaker, so perhaps someone can explain further.
