Ter.... or estar com....?

If you want to say I am hot, I am cold I am hungry, I am thirsty, which is the more usual construct. Would you say
Estou com fome or Tenho fome
Estou com sede or Tenho sede
Estou com calor or Tenho calor
Estou com frio or Tenho frio.

Or is there no difference at all.

I remember silencing a table in my early days of learning French, by announcing “Je suis chaude” instead of “J’ai chaud”. Basically I was announcing “I’m hot to trot” .Don’t want to make that mistake again.

Thanks so much, Francesca

In all these cases, there is no difference and both options are used all the time, so choose (or alternate) as you wish. There is also no double sens to fear! Maybe just avoid saying “Estou quente”, unless you’re running a fever :face_with_hand_over_mouth: It’s perfectly fine to say that a room or area “está quente”, though.
