Portuguese visited New Zealand '250 years before (Captain)Cook'

"Had Portuguese military might not been compromised by a disastrous invasion of Morocco in the 1560s, New Zealand and Australia could have been very different countries.
“We’d all be speaking Portuguese, I suppose,” Trickett said. “And we’d be a lot better at soccer.”

A planned visit to Wellington will include a visit to Te Papa -
The Museum of New Zealand and the opportunity to view what should be IMO called “The Portuguese Helmet” although some say it’s Spanish.
I have chosen to post this link https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=10429904 which may be of interest to those folks interested in Portuguese history.
What amazed me was, “a small country (Portugal) of just two million people” when they were the top global nation.

Wow, as a Kiwi living in Australia, this discovery would have made my learning of European Portuguese quite unnecessary lol,

The Portuguese discovered the world, the English conquered it. I’m glad we’ve always been friends :muscle:
