O bebé é tão lindo

A came across the phrase “O bebé é tão lindo” which was translated to “**The baby is so beautiful masc.” **The question that I have is the clarification of it being “masculine” in the English.

I thought “lindo/a” would always be masculine (lind) because bebé is a masculine noun, regardless of the gender of the baby. Please clarify.

Olá, @chokers_gossips6h. Bebé is an invariable noun, without a defined gender, per se (only varying in number - bebé/bebés), but it’s indirectly gendered through the preceding article. So, a male baby is o bebé, while a female baby is a bebé (when the gender is unknown, we tend to default to masculine). So, you should match the adjective’s gender to that of the article:

  • O bebé é tão lindo
  • A bebé é tão linda
