"MAU" x "MAL"--Qual é a diferença?

Por favor, poderiam me explicar a diferença entre “mal” e “mau”? Não tenho certeza de quando usar um termo ou outro.

mal is a noun: (the) bad, illness,
mal is an adjective: ele está mal, não faz mal
mau/má is an adverb: mau tempo, má situação

[mvrudloffI I think you got the adjective and the adverb backwards. Mal is and adverb and a noun and má and mau are adjectives. Situação is a noun and must be modified by an adjective, not an adverb. Also, I think it is usually best to have the adjective after the noun unless you are stressing how really bad it is. Am I right about this folks?

Mal/bem (badly/well) → Adverbs
Mau/bom (bad/good) → Adjectives

But @mvrudloff is also partly correct when noting that “mal” (and “bem”) can be used as a noun. Some examples of all these:

Use of ‘mal’ as a noun

  • O mal não vencerá! (Evil shall not win!)
  • Ele sofre de um mal severo. (He suffers from a severe illness)

Use of ‘mal’ as an adverb

  • Eu canto mal. (I sing badly)
  • Nós fomos mal recebidos. (We were badly welcomed).

Use of ‘mau’ (adjective)

  • Tu és uma má pessoa. (You’re a bad person)
  • Este é um mau sinal. (This is a bad sign)

E quanto ao universal “Esta bem!” - Neste caso não é “bem” usado como um adjectivo?

“Bem” também é classificado como advérbio nessa frase.
