just confused about the “que” in this sentence. I thought que=what. Could you not say “eu digo sim” ?
@kyrapup50, these two forms are possible:
- Eu digo que sim
- Eu digo “sim”
In the first option, the “que” should not be read as “what”. It’s more of a “I say that…”. It’s not directly translatable into English in this case.

Following up on this. Is saying ““Eu digo sim” . grammatically incorrect?
There was an additional one which had the same sort of contruction Nós dizemos sempre que não.
If it grammatically incorrect to not have the que in there is there a way to remember ?
@laughingiiis It’s not grammatically incorrect if you phrase it as a direct quotation (in writing):
- Eu digo “sim” / Eu digo “não”
Adding “que” allows you to phrase it without the quotation marks. This distinction is of course irrelevant in speech.
