Ela tanto cozinha, como come

I find this grammatical structure difficult to wrap my brain around. I understand it in the language notes before the lesson, but when I actually do the lesson, I have trouble. Any other ways of explaining this topic?

@chokers_gossips6h, if the language notes are clear, perhaps it’s more a matter of exposure to this structure than of understanding. Whenever you see “tanto…como…” (the spacing in between is important), you can just mentally replace it with an “e” (and), because the only purpose of that phrase is to add two elements. The same applies to phrases such as “bem como”, “não só… como também…”, or “não só… como ainda…”, for example.

  • Tanto ele como ela são estrangeiros. = Ele e ela são estrangeiros. (Both him and her are foreigners)
  • Eu tanto canto como danço = Eu canto e danço (I both sing and dance)
  • Nós não só estudamos, como também trabalhamos = Nós estudamos e trabalhamos (We both study and work)

In German it is „sowohl …. als auch ….“,

in English it is „both … and ….“,

in Português e „tanto … como…“

  • Sei tanto ler como escrever.
