Hi all,
Is it just me or can I only practice affirmative commands in the imperative section of the verbs page? If that is so, would it be possible for Practice Portuguese team to add the negative conjugations to be added?
Thank you!
Olá, @ldl! Strictly speaking, all true imperative forms are affirmative only and apply to the pronouns tu and vós*. Affirmative imperative sentences using the pronouns você/vocês and all negative imperative sentences for any pronoun must use verb conjugations from the present subjunctive, which is why we don’t really drill those negations as part of the imperative mood, although we explain how to form them in this Learning Note: The Imperative in Portuguese | Practice Portuguese. Some examples:
- (Tu) Fala comigo. → true imperative conjugation
- (Tu) Não fales comigo. → present subjunctive conjugation
- (Você) Fale comigo. → present subjunctive conjugation
- (Você) Não fale comigo. → present subjunctive conjugation
Our exercise Unit on the imperative does include both affirmative and negative sentences
*vós is a pronoun with regionally restricted use and not actively covered in Practice Portuguese at the moment, since vocês has become the dominant alternative pronoun for the most part.
