Cognates: how much do they help in understanding spoken European Portuguese?

We know that cognates can be extremely helpful in reading (and maybe writing and speaking), but how much do they help in listening?

To find out, I’ve created this short research task, which involves listening to five sentences, each containing six Portuguese-English cognates. How many can you spot? How much did they aid your understanding?

Please participate if you’re interested. I’ll share a link to the results here later.

Thanks to those of you who took part in the research task about cognates.

The results were, as we say in the biz, “hard to interpret.” (I definitely needed to control how many times folks could listen to each sentence.)

Even so, I got enough data to support the contrasting use of two of those sentences in the intro to this piece about word stress and how it contributes to our difficulties understanding spoken European Portuguese.

Please check it out if you’re interested.
