When does one use the word “abaixo” versus “debaixo”?
Here are some examples from the lessons:
Ele nada abaixo da superfície
A cave está abaixo do solo
O cão dorme debaixo da mesa
A mulher está debaixo do guarda-chuva
Are there instances when you should
use one over the other?
Or can they be freely substituted?

@josef.jurek, here’s a forum topic that already covers this matter: Abaixo and debaixo - Portuguese Questions / Grammar - Practice Portuguese Feel free to ask any follow-up questions over there, as I’ll close this one just to avoid duplication.
