Is anyone using a (beginners) grammar book?

Is anyone using a (beginners) grammar book? A grammar book might be a good companion for this course.

Any suggestions pls? Nothing too detailed/comprehensive because it could be overwhelming.

Or are you just working thru the verbs section here on PP?

I recommend Aprender Português, A1-2. Goes over the basics, Present tense (some Preterite), pronouns, prepositions, etc. Some daily - conversational - aspects covered as well. Audio clips available for download as well. There are also volumes for B1-2 and C1.

Gramatica Activa is pretty good as well. Passaporte para Português and Português en Foco were less useful for me, but it all depends on your learning style as to what will yield the most benefit.

Thank you @amkjers! I’ll check it out. Obrigado, Peter

I am using Gramatica Ativa 1 and find it quite useful, compliments Practice Portuguese very well.

Gramática Ativa 1 & 2 are excellent. Although the explanations are in Portuguese, the many examples quickly make clear each grammatical point. However, it is the exercises that accompany each chapter that really help to consolidate your learning. The layout is very user friendly.

I also use ‘Portuguese Grammar You Really Need to Know” by Sue Tyson-Ward. (It is part of the Teach Yourself series)
It is a more detailed grammar without being too heavy. I find it helpful to ‘dip into’ when I need more explanation of a grammatical point. Although you could work your way through it, I think it works better to use it to supplement your learning from other areas. There are exercises at the end of each chapter but personally I do not rate them. That said, it is my ‘Bible’ for Portuguese Grammar that I can turn to if I need to quickly check a grammatical point.

Thanks @michael.pearce! That is very helpful and agrees with @stephencanthony and @kadoucet.

Gramática Ativa 1 (e mais tarde “2”) são a meu ver excelentes.
No caso quiseres treinar as tuas competências gramaticais
recomendo: “Vamos lá começar”
“Vamos lá continuar”
é o segundo volume.
Bom êxito!

Likewise. It’s logical enough with the help of Google translate.

I have found this very useful as a supplement to PP. It is available from Amazon for just over a fiver!
One reviewer says that the Kindle version is not well laid out and contains errors so may be worth avoiding but hey, at £2.25 in the UK, if it proves to be bad the financial loss wont ne life changing!!

yeah I have both the paperback and kindle version of this book. It is excellent. It is quite short, and is designed for a working understanding of Portuguese, rather than for an in-depth expertise. So that is great - it is just the right level for people doing PP. It is quite short, which makes it easy to read/complete.

GA1 is also really excellent
